A New Qualifying Format
Instead of the usual flat draw, organisers have introduced a tiered qualifying system. The top 16 in the rankings go straight into the last-64 main draw — their matches are held over to the main arena in Wuhan, meaning they don’t play qualifying at all. Players ranked 17th to 32nd also enter at the last 64, but have to come through qualifying in Leicester. Everyone else works their way up from earlier rounds — more than 130 players competed for places in the draw overall.
- Selby, Trump, O’Sullivan, Higgins, Murphy and Wu Yize all skipped qualifying entirely — they go straight into the main draw.

Judd Trump currently tops the world rankings, even though he crashed out in the first round in Taiyuan and picked up no ranking points there. On the official two-year ranking list as of 17 August, the gap to his pursuers isn’t insurmountable — five players could finish August as world No.1 simply by winning the Wuhan Open: Trump himself, Neil Robertson, Zhao Xintong, Wu Yize and Mark Selby.

The defending champion arrives in Wuhan as one of the leading contenders for a genuinely historic result. Xiao Guodong won the title in 2024, then defended it in 2025 with a 10-9 final win over Gary Wilson. A win this year would make him the first player to win the Wuhan Open three times running.
